How to Photograph in the Snow!

iPhone tips:

So you just woke up to see a surprise blanket of white on your neighborhood! Grab your iPhone and hit the streets!

-Remember you have the option to hit the “sunshine bar” when focused on a subject to increase and decrease the exposure.

-Be sure to snap some pics with contrasting colors in the background so the snow will actually show!

-Get out there early before the light gets too bright and the scene gets too tracked up!

Got Camera?

If you are using your favorite camera to snap snow pics:

-Photograph in Adobe Camera Raw when possible. This will give you so many more options for editing.

-Choose to overexpose a bit (your camera will be trying to underexpose) so that you camera captures as much of the light of possible. Grey snow would be a bummer! (Unless that’s yer thang;)

-Make sure your white balance is showing snow as white not blue. Again, unless that is what you are going for. Photography is an artform…if you want blue snow, have at it!

-Be aware of your shutter speed. If you are hoping to catch individual flakes you’ll need a faster shutter speed.

-Spice things up a bit and add some color contrast to your snowy scene: a brightly colored car or coat will create some drama and constrast.

Extras:

If you want to get super fancy consider these suggestions:

-Use a lens hood and other protective gear to keep your camera dry and avoid changing lenses in rain or snow sessions.

-Plan a snow session in the mountains and take some time to prep with protective gear for you and your camera. Bring extra plastic drop clothes, extra footwear, clothes and snacks. If travelling solo, remember to bring extra battery for your cell and let a family member or friend know where you are going to be and when you will head back.
